Sweet Potato: Mashed

How to make mashed sweet potatoes, the most healthy means of cooking sweet potatoes.

Health Information


  • Large pot for boiling
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Fork
  • Masher: Potato/Bean
  • Frying pan for sauteing


  • Sweet Potatoes: 4 (~2 lbs)
  • Garlic: 3 cloves, minced or crushed/pressed
  • Butter/margarine: 3 tablespoons
  • Salt
  • Pepper


Food Preparation

  1. Mince/crush/press the garlic
  2. Wash the potatoes
  3. Cut the potatoes into cubes
  4. Optional: Peel the potatoes – not recommended, see Tips for details
  5. Add potatoes and enough water to cover the potatoes in the pot


  1. Saute garlic in butter/margarine
  2. Bring the water to a boil
  3. Boil the potatoes until soft – test with a fork
  4. Drain the water
  5. Pour the sauteed garlic over the potatoes
  6. Mash the contents in the pot
  7. Add salt/pepper to taste


  • Sweet potatoes are more healthy if the sweet potatoes are not peeled
  • The smaller the cubes, the faster the cook.  But smaller cubes can be more difficult to stab with forks to determine if they’re ready for mashing.
  • Before cooking: Store potatoes in a cool, dark place with ventilation and they will keep for weeks. Do not store them in the refrigerator or they will turn brown and have develop a strange flavor.
