Cottage/Shepherds Pie

It’s a baked dish with protein on the bottom layer, and mashed potato as a layer on top.  Some times there’s vegetables mixed with the protein layer, or vegetables are a layer between the protein and the mashed potato.  Depending on who you talk to, Shepherds Pie means the protein is lamb and using any other protein makes it a “Cottage” pie.  Because shepherds tend to sheep.

Prerequisites

  • Deep pan
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Frying pan

Ingredients

  • Protein: beef (minced/ground), soy, lamb
  • Broth: should match protein – vegetable for soy
  • Onion
  • Mushroom
  • Garlic
  • Celery
  • Carrot
  • Corn
  • Green peas
  • Sweet potato: mash (recipe)
  • Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

Food Preparation

  1. Mince/crush/press the garlic

Cooking

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 F
  2. Mash the sweet potatoes (recipe)
  3. Cook the protein
  4. Saute mushroom/onion/garlic/carrot (recipe)
  5. Add the broth, celery, corn and peas to the saute pan but don’t bother cooking/sauteing
  6. Add a layer of protein to the pan
  7. Add the layer of saute over top of the protein
  8. Add a layer of mashed potato, style as you like
  9. Bake for 20 minutes or until potato browns/crisps
  10. Remove the pan from the oven
  11. Let the pan cool for ~10 minutes before serving

Tips

  • Green peas: don’t put in too much because they’re a very good source of vitamin K
